A handmade agalmatolite box

The box was made by craftsmen in Agra, India — the city of the Taj Mahal with its famous stone carving. Agalmatolite, known as "soapstone", is soft and warm to the touch and easy to carve, so Indian carvers create fine patterns in it: the surface is painted and then the design is cut through to the light stone. Every box is painted and carved by hand, so the shade and details may vary slightly — you get a one-of-a-kind piece.
