Who Hotei is

Hotei (布袋, Budai) is the Laughing Buddha, a wandering monk who lived in China in the 10th century. He is regarded as an embodiment of Maitreya, the Buddha of the future. Hotei is shown as a fat, cheerful monk with a big sack in which he carried gifts for children and the poor. He symbolises joy, carefreeness, prosperity and generosity; according to belief, rubbing Hotei's belly makes a wish come true.

Hotei symbolically:

brings joy and a good mood;
attracts prosperity and luck;
helps wishes come true;
fills the home with ease and harmony.

Where to place it

Hotei is placed in the living room opposite the entrance so that he "greets" guests, in the south-eastern wealth area, on a desk or by a cash desk.

As a gift

Hotei is one of the most popular Feng Shui gifts — for a colleague, friend, manager, a housewarming or birthday — with a wish for joy and prosperity.
