Altar Figurine “Mara the Many-Faced”, Large

Mara, or Morana, is the Slavic goddess of winter, night, death and rebirth. Her many faces reflect her ability to appear in different guises, from a beautiful maiden to the stern mistress of winter.

Meaning in tradition. At the end of winter the Slavs burned or drowned a straw effigy of Mara in the river, seeing off the cold and welcoming spring. Mara was honoured as the power that ends the old to make room for the new and as the keeper of secret knowledge and wisdom about the cycle of life.
