What the Wu Lou gourd means
The Wu Lou calabash gourd (葫芦, hu lu) is a traditional Chinese symbol of health and longevity: in ancient times medicine was kept in dried gourds, and in legends sages kept the elixir of immortality in a gourd. Its name sounds like 福禄 (fu lu) — "happiness and prosperity", and its two-part shape symbolises the union of Heaven and Earth.
The coins and knot
Chinese coins are a symbol of wealth: the circle stands for Heaven and the square hole for Earth. The braided Chinese knot is a wish for endless luck, and by tradition the tassel "sweeps away" unfavourable energy. Together these symbols form an amulet that symbolically:
supports health and longevity;
attracts happiness and prosperity;
protects the home and its owner;
brings luck in business;
protects on the road.
Brown and orange tones belong to the Earth element and symbolise stability, reliability and care for the family.
Where to hang it
The pendant is hung by the head of the bed, in a bedroom, in the eastern part of the home — the family and health area — on the front door handle or in a car. Its small size also lets you hang it on a bag or backpack.
As a gift
A Wu Lou gourd with coins is a traditional gift for parents and grandparents, for an anniversary or housewarming, as a wish for health, longevity and well-being.
