Altar Figurine “Asclepius”
Asclepius is the ancient Greek god of the healing art, son of Apollo and a wise healer taught by the centaur Chiron. The figurine shows him with a staff entwined by a serpent, the famous Rod of Asclepius.
Meaning in tradition. The Rod of Asclepius with its serpent is still the symbol of medicine throughout the world. In his sanctuaries, the asclepieia, the largest of which was at Epidaurus, people sought rest, calm and prophetic dreams.
