Vajrapani is an important figure in the Buddhist tradition, symbolizing strength and energy. He is one of the three great bodhisattvas (beings seeking enlightenment), along with Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri. Vajrapani is usually depicted with bright, golden hair, which is where his name comes from ("Vajra" means "brilliance" or "lightning" and "pani" means "possessor"). He is often depicted with a three-headed appearance, which symbolizes his strength and wisdom. In his hands he holds a vajra (a noble weapon and a symbol of immortality) and a lotus (a symbol of purity). Vajrapani is considered the guardian of the Dharma (the director of enlightenment and awareness) and is therefore often depicted in murals and icons of Buddhist temples. Its form is also the object of meditation and practice in Buddhist Tantrism. A weakened version of Vajrapani is considered to be Godanta Vajrapani, who is depicted in an unpleasant pose. It is often used to protect against evil spirits and negative forces. He is considered an emanation of Vajrapani and has the power to expel and subdue evil spirits.
