Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, was an Indian lama who came to Tibet in the 8th century. He was the founder of Nima Buddhism and is considered an important figure in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Padmasambhava is considered to be the one who brought Buddhism to Tibet and helped spread it there. His arrival in Tibet is associated with legends and miracles, and he is considered the supreme bodhisattva, capable of transforming all unfavorable conditions into favorable conditions for spiritual practice. He founded monasteries, taught disciples, and created sacred texts that are still the basis for many Buddhist practices in Tibet. His teachings are based on the practice of tantra, meditation and visualization. Padmasambhava is considered the author of such important texts as Bardo Thodol (Book of the Dead), Transfusion of Consciousness and The Great Vidyadhara. His image is often depicted in Tibetan and Buddhist art, usually with symbols of his strength, wisdom and compassion. It is also considered a protector against adverse forces and energies. Padmasambhava is still celebrated in Tibet and other Tibetan Buddhist countries on Guru Rinpoche Day, which is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the 5th lunar week of the lunar calendar.
